“ও মা, ফাগুনে তোর আমের বনে ঘ্রাণে পাগল করে,”
“The aroma of the mango orchard in the spring time drives me crazy, O mother dear”. From Tagore’s “Aamar sonar Bangla”(আমার সোনার বাংলা).
“Aamar Sonar Bangla” was written by Tagore in 1905 when British tried to split the united Bengal. Due to movements, when they failed, they changed the strategy and spitted Bengal into provinces on linguistic basis. This resulted then Bengali dominated district Manbhum detached from Bengal and attached to Bihar-Orissa province in 1912.
Tagore wrote host of other songs such as this were meant to rekindle the unified spirit of Bengal, to raise public consciousness against the communal political divide.
Part of this song, Bangladesh adopted as their National Anthem in 1971.
