Culture pushed the cause for Bengali language in Dhanbad.

Jharkhand Bangla Bhasa Unnayan Samiti, a language rights organisation, held a cultural programme at Gandhi Seva Sadan in Dhanbad on Sunday to press for their demand to recruit Bengali teachers and regularise the subject in all government schools.

The programme successfully wooed the audience and also paid tribute to legendary classical singer Manna Dey.

From matching steps with Dey’s unforgettable melody like Amay ektu jaaiga daa maa er mondire boshi to other patriotic tracks of Lata Mangeshkar like Ay mere watan ke logon, performers regaled the audience.

“The basic aim of hosting the event is to make people aware about the cultural heritage of our nation and also to put pressure on the Jharkhand government to appoint Bengali language teachers in all state schools,” said founder and president of the organisation Bengu Thakur.

He added that the language is being neglected despite the state giving it a second language status on November 14, 2011.

“The free distribution of Bengali books is also not being carried out, despite being mandatory as per Right to Education Act,” rued Thakur.
